Lucia Atkinson is a violinist based in the Portland Metro area. She began studying at age three and played in many diverse ensembles in her early years. She served as the concertmaster of the Portland Youth Philharmonic, with whom she also soloed; won silver and bronze medals at the State Solo contest; recorded on the indie-rock album Her Majesty the Decemberists by The Decemberists; and performed frequently with chamber ensembles. After spending summers studying at the The Quartet Program, Kneisel Hall and the Amalfi Chamber Music Festival in Italy, she received her Bachelor of Music from Rice University, where she studied with Sergiu Luca. She then went on to study with Laurie Smukler at SUNY Purchase, where she received a Master of Music and an Artist’s Diploma. While at Purchase, she also received the Brookshire Award for Musicology and served as a guest lecturer. She is currently a tenured member of the Portland Opera, a regular sub in the Oregon Symphony, and a freelance violinist with many other local orchestras and chamber music groups.
